The founder of ISS Boxing Gym

Robert McInnes began his journey in combat sports in the 1970s, initially focusing on boxing. Already an accomplished martial artist, he sought to enhance his skills in boxing and trained daily with Bobby Stininato, a former sparring partner of the legendary Muhammad Ali. During their training sessions, Stininato advised McInnes to leverage his unique ability to absorb knowledge and to become a great teacher. Stininato emphasized that while many aspire to be fighters, few have the ability to become great teachers, and this insight profoundly influenced McInnes’s career trajectory.

Taking Stininato’s advice to heart, McInnes shifted his focus from training to becoming a boxer to mastering the art of teaching boxing, by blending boxing with his extensive martial arts background. This combination allowed him to bring practicality and effectiveness to fighting techniques, shaping a unique training approach.

Over his extensive career, McInnes has trained numerous world-class fighters across various combat sports. Among those he has mentored are renowned athletes like Stan “The Man” and three-time K-1 World Champion Peter Aerts, The Gypsy King Tyson Fury, as well as WBC former champions Yodasan Sornatachai and Yoddumlung. He has also worked with Muay Thai legends from the Golden Era, such as Sukmongkol Sitchuchork and Tepitak ISS, and many other champions from Thailand.

Robert McInnes Senior is a pivotal figure in the history of combat sports in Thailand, particularly during the golden era of Muay Thai and boxing. He holds the unique distinction of being the only foreigner to receive a prestigious Lumpinee Stadium promoter’s ring in the golden era, an honor bestowed upon him by General Shalow Kongsuwan, the president of Lumpinee Stadium in the mid-1980s. This accolade places him alongside only one other individual, Songchai Ratanasuban, who was Lumpinee’s top promoter at the time.

In addition to his promotional achievements, McInnes made history as the first foreigner to serve as a referee under the banner of Lumpinee Stadium in this era, officiating legendary bouts such as the iconic matchup between Ramon Deckers and Jomhod. His contributions to the sport were not limited to the ring; he collaborated closely with notable figures like Khu Yodtong, Ajan Bramot, and Khun Maimongkong to ensure that Sit One Songchai and Lumpinee consistently attracted large crowds, showcasing only the best match ups.

Under his guidance, ISS Boxing Gym became a training ground for champions, with Songchai Ratanasuban sending elite WBA and WBC champions to assist in developing local talent. Notably, he played a crucial role in the careers of Yodsanan and Yoddumlung, both of whom went on under McInnes guidance to become WBA world champions.

As the only foreigner licensed to promote Muay Thai and boxing in Thailand during the Golden era, McInnes successfully organized major events under the ISS and Golden Tiger banner. The popularity of these events necessitated their relocation to outdoor stadiums to accommodate the growing crowds, solidifying his reputation as a key player in the Boxing and Muay Thai scene.

Robert McInnes Senior’s legacy continues to impact the world of martial arts, and his contributions have left an indelible mark on the history of ISS Boxing Gym and the broader combat sports community.
